Essex Steps Training Programmes

Essex Steps is grounded on sound practice based evidence which has been well monitored and evaluated. It is endorsed by Essex County Council.

The programme is designed to provide high quality understanding and training in the management of behaviour and the prevention of behaviour from escalating. It includes ethical restrictive physical intervention (restraint) training.

Essex Steps has the following aims:

  • To support settings with developing a therapeutic approach to behaviour
  • To promote the inseparable link between teaching, learning and behaviour
  • To improve staff confidence and safety
  • To support the inclusion of those with difficult or dangerous behaviours
  • To reduce exclusions
  • To support consistency within services
  • To support Senior Leadership Teams in the development of quality policy and planning

The Essex Steps programme, delivered through Step On and Step Up courses, is designed to provide high quality understanding and training in the management of challenging behaviour. It includes ethical physical intervention and restrictive physical intervention (restraint) training.

Essex Steps is delivered by practitioners from the Essex Special School Education Trust and quality assured partner practitioners.

Essex Steps courses are available for Essex Mainstream and Special Schools and can be booked via the ESSET website.

The model for delivering the Step On training is via train the trainer events.  Delegates will be trained on how to deliver Step On back in their own school setting.  This is a 3 day training programme, the outcome of which is that the individuals who have undertaken the training are then accredited to deliver the programme within their own school setting.  We have found that this is a more effective way of achieving the cultural change within the organisation to embed the philosophy of the programme.  We recommend that at least two individuals from each school attend the training.   The charge for Step On tutor training is £400 per delegate.
